The Great War destroyed the old world, but it was the wars that followed that condemned this part of the Wasteland. For decades, the Brotherhood of Steel and remnants of the Enclave fought for control of military installations, arsenals, and pre-War technology. When the conflict finally ended, both had vanished from the region—taking with them whatever still worked and leaving behind burned cities, empty bunkers, and abandoned communities. Without government or protection, survivors occupied factories, mines, farms, and power plants. Control of the means of production became the true source of power: those who produced food, energy, medicine, and ammunition could build walls, hire soldiers, and impose their own law. From this new order, two great powers emerged. The Red Raiders united workers, refugees, and collective settlements under the promise that the resources of the Wasteland belonged to everyone. The NCR Patriots, claiming the legacy of the New California Republic, promised to restore law, property, and civilization. Both began as movements of protection. Both became machines of war. Now, every town is pressured to choose a side. The Reds see neutrality as complicity with oppressors. The Patriots consider it treason against the Republic. In the name of equality or order, both sides commit atrocities and claim that only total victory can bring peace. Between them rose the Sisterhood of Steel, founded by refugees, doctors, mechanics, and deserters who seized an abandoned Brotherhood bunker. With no faith in the promises of either the Reds or the Patriots, they turned the facility into a fortress, hospital, and sanctuary for women threatened by the war. The old America died in nuclear fire. The new one may die trying to decide which flag should be raised over its ruins.
